What is Chemotherapy Made Of?

When you hear discussions about cancer, chances are chemotherapy is also a part of the conversation. That’s because chemotherapy is often the first course of treatment for many cancer patients. But what exactly is chemotherapy, and what is it made of?

At Cochise Oncology, our experienced cancer specialists often include chemotherapy in our cancer treatment plan.

What is Chemotherapy?

Chemotherapy (chemo) refers to the use of medicines or drugs to destroy cancer cells. Chemotherapy is a popular cancer treatment because it effectively targets the fast-growing cancer cells in the body and stops them from growing and dividing.

We have various forms of chemotherapy available for treating cancer. These drugs may be used alone or combined with other medicines or procedures to achieve the best outcomes.

What is Chemotherapy Made of?

Some chemotherapy drugs are derived from natural sources such as bacteria and plants, while others are made using synthetic processes

There are more than 100 types of chemotherapy drugs on the market approved for different types of cancer. Chemotherapy drugs are divided into several groups, including alkylating agents, antimetabolites, and antitumor antibiotics.

Alkylating agents work by damaging the DNA of the cancer cells, preventing them from reproducing. They are used to treat various types of cancer, including lung cancer, breast cancer, and leukemia.

Antimetabolites kill cancer cells by disrupting the normal metabolism of cells. When this happens, the cell is no longer able to divide and grow. Antimetabolites are commonly used to treat leukemia and cancer of the breast and ovary.

Antitumor antibiotics are made from natural products derived from the group of soil bacteria known as streptomyces. These medicines inhibit the growth of cancer by altering the DNA within the cancer cells.

How is Chemotherapy Administered?

Our oncologists administer chemotherapy in different ways. The method used will depend on the type and stage of the cancer being treated and the treatment plan.

Chemotherapy is commonly administered intravenously directly into the vein but can also be given orally. Chemo treatment is often done in cycles to give your body time to recover between treatments.

How Does Chemotherapy Work?

Chemotherapy works by preventing the cancer cells from growing or reproducing. This helps to stop the spread of cancer. We also use chemo to reduce the size of tumors.
