What Causes Prostate Cancer and How Can You Treat It?

If you have been diagnosed with prostate cancer, you may wonder what caused it and how your doctor will treat it. Prostate cancer treatment can include a range of treatments to give you the best results. Your Cochise Oncology specialist will develop an individualized treatment plan tailored to your needs.

What Causes Prostate Cancer?

While scientists do not know precisely what causes prostate cancer, they have identified several factors that increase your risk. Only men have a prostate, and most men with prostate cancer are over the age of 65. Research has found an association between prostate cancer and higher red meat and fat consumption. Scientists have found that higher testosterone levels also play a role. As with many other types of cancer, family history can put you at a higher risk of prostate cancer.

How Can You Treat Prostate Cancer?

Prostate cancer can be treated in several ways. Your Cochise Oncology specialist develops your treatment plan using the best methods for your needs. Most types of cancer therapy target the DNA of rapidly dividing cells. Your treatment might include:

Radiation Therapy

Radiation works on prostate cancer by stopping the cancer cells from dividing. Radiation energy damages DNA and has a particularly powerful effect on fast-dividing cancer cells. Radiation therapy precisely targets the tumor, so it does not damage surrounding tissues.

Chemotherapy

Most chemotherapy agents also attack cancer cells by stopping them from dividing. Some agents break DNA, while others prevent cells from copying their DNA and making new cells. Chemotherapy targets rapidly dividing cells that need to make DNA quickly.

Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy uses your immune system to fight prostate cancer. It “teaches” the immune system to target cancer cells and destroy them. It may use antibodies, cytokines, or other immune system components to activate an attack on cancer cells.

How Can I Prevent Prostate Cancer?

As men age, cells in the prostate commonly undergo pre-cancerous changes. Most of these cells will never become cancerous, but they occur in over half of men over 65. Routine screening is the best way to catch potential problems while they are easily treatable. Early diagnosis usually leads to an excellent outcome.

Am I a Good Candidate for Prostate Cancer Treatment?
