How Does Radiation Therapy Work?

The term radiation therapy can make cancer patients feel nervous. However, radiation therapy is one of the safest and most effective procedures that treat several types of cancers. But how does radiation therapy work?

What Is Radiation Therapy?

At Cochise Oncology, we offer three different radiation therapy treatments. Radiation therapy is a procedure that delivers precise, controlled radiation exposure to help kill cancer cells.

Radiation therapy commonly and successfully treats several types of cancers. One of our doctors carefully chooses to match patients to the radiation therapy treatment that fits their unique circumstances. Your specialist will perform a comprehensive evaluation that determines which treatment is suitable for you.

How Does Radiation Therapy Work?

Radiation therapy, regardless of type, works by keeping cancer cells from growing and then causing those cells to die. It is a local treatment that aims a controlled beam of radiation toward the area of the body affected by cancer.

We offer three types of radiation therapies – TomoTherapy®, Varian, and Xoft®. While using the same technology, they have slightly different goals and approaches to cancer treatment.

Which Radiation Therapy Is Best For Me?

One of our doctors carefully determines which radiation therapy is best for you during your consultation. Three radiation therapy treatments we offer are:

  • TomoTherapy® precisely targets and treats cancerous tumors with its revolutionary CT-image technology, causing the least amount of harm to the healthy tissue surrounding the tumor. It can also treat several cancers, including prostate cancer, head, brain, neck, and lung tumors.
  • Varian uses adaptive radiation to target and kill cancer cells without harming healthy ones. Varian can be used in conjunction with other cancer therapies such as immunotherapy, chemotherapy, and surgical procedures.
  • Xoft® commonly treats skin cancer by using a tiny X-ray source to deliver radiation treatment. The portable Xoft® machine can help treat anatomically difficult locations safely and effectively.
