Dr. Janet Nettleton’s philosophy of medicine centers on total patient care and commitment to innovative cancer treatment. She and her partners at Southwest Oncology Centers are developing centers of excellence across Arizona. Dr. Nettleton was raised in Kirkland, Washington, and traveled extensively in her first career as a Department of Defense school counselor in Germany and Turkey before returning to the states to train for her second career in medicine. Dr. Nettleton has four children. Sonya is a software architect and actress in Los Angeles, Shannon is a Dartmouth educated stay-at-home Mom in Oregon, Rick is a pre-med student at the University of Arizona and Rob is a Pima Community College business student.
Dr. Nettleton completed medical school and residency in Radiation Oncology in Norfolk, Virginia where she was mentored by Dr. Anas El-Mahdi and Dr. Deborah Kuban and was chosen among her peers to be the Chief Resident. Following residency she returned to her roots in Seattle as a fellow in prostate brachytherapy with prostate implant pioneers Dr. John Blasko and Dr. Haakon Ragde. Dr. Nettleton first met her partner, Dr. Gordon Grado, in Seattle when both were lecturing at the Northwest Hospital brachytherapy course in 1997. It was then they first discussed the vision of developing centers of excellence for cancer treatment.
Over several years, Dr. Nettleton has worked with community hospitals and Urologists to start prostate brachytherapy programs in Wenatchee, Washington, Klamath Falls, Oregon, and Sierra Vista, Arizona. Their programs brought innovative treatment to rural communities and all remain active. Dr. Nettleton worked as part of a large multi-specialty group in Wenatchee, Washington before joining Dr. Saul Silverman in a private practice in Klamath Falls, Oregon. After Dr. Silverman’s motorcycle accident in 2001, Dr. Nettleton began looking for a new partner with the same dedication to excellence in patient care. In 2003 she moved to Arizona to develop a new community cancer center in Sierra Vista and has partnered with Dr. Grado and Southwest Oncology Centers to develop this center as a Center of Excellence.
Dr. Nettleton has experience in a new radiation treatment method called TomoTherapy, an image-guided (IGRT) modality. She is excited about this new technology and it’s ability to treat tumors to higher doses while limiting exposure of healthy tissue. Southwest Oncology Centers is the leader in TomoTherapy in the Southwest and Dr. Nettleton is excited to bring this treatment to Sierra Vista. |
